Questions we get a lot about palm maintenance.
How often should palms be pruned?
Once a year is plenty for most Sydney palms. Canary islands and queens benefit from a de-seed pass before the seeds ripen, then a frond clean later in the year. Cocos and Bangalows usually only need one visit.
Can palms be 'shaped' or made shorter?
No. Palms grow from a single growth point at the top of the trunk. Cut the top off and the palm dies. The only way to lower a palm is to remove and replace it. Anyone telling you otherwise should not be on the property.
What's the white powder on my palm?
Usually mealybug or scale. Both treatable, both worth dealing with before the palm declines. If we see it during a maintenance visit, we'll flag it and quote treatment if you want it.
Do palm fronds need to be hauled off?
Yes — palm fronds don't chip well and aren't great mulch, so we haul them off-site for green-waste recycling. Stays included in the quote, no separate disposal fee.
Are palms council-protected?
Some species and some sizes are, depending on the council. Phoenix canariensis specimens on the Eastern Suburbs and North Shore are commonly protected. We check before we quote a removal — never lift a saw without confirming.
