What's wrong with topping a tree?
Topping triggers panic regrowth — fast, weak shoots that snap in the next storm. The tree never recovers a strong structure, decay sets in at the cut sites, and within five years you've got a worse problem than you started with. The Australian pruning standard explicitly does not endorse topping.
When is the best time to prune trees in Sydney?
Most species prune well in late winter through early spring, before the new flush. Some flowering trees are pruned just after they flower so you don't lose next year's buds. Dead-wooding and emergency pruning happen any time — but heavy structural work is best off the heat of summer.
Do I need a permit to prune a tree in Sydney?
Pruning under 10% of the canopy is usually exempt under most council Tree Preservation Orders, but the rules vary by council and species. We check before we quote, especially in Woollahra, Mosman, Killara and Ku-ring-gai where regulations are stricter.
How often should mature trees be pruned?
Most healthy mature trees in Sydney benefit from a structural inspection and light pruning every two to three years. Heritage trees on large estates often need annual canopy management — that's where our Tree Management plans come in.
Can you remove just the lower branches blocking my driveway?
Yes — that's crown lifting, and it's one of the simplest pruning jobs we do. We remove the lower limbs to a clean lateral or trunk cut, leaving a healthy underline. Driveways, paths, garages and rooflines are routine work.
